Fiber Optic Communal DSTV System

The use of Optical Fiber (also commonly spelled Fibre) has rapidly become a major talking point when installing or upgrading a Communal DSTV System. Johannesburg, in particular, experiences major Lightning storms and Electrical Surge and this accounts for more than 90% of all maintenance costs within any Communal DSTV System. Apart from the high maintenance costs, the down-time of DSTV services can become very frustrating for anyone living in a complex where this is constantly occurring. There is a solution to this problem through the use of an Optical Fiber DSTV Communal System.

It is also very important to note that with the upcoming Satellite Signal changes that Multichoice is undertaking, the use of Optical Fiber Technology will Future-proof your DSTV Communal System.

  • Multichoice currently only uses what is known as ‘LOW BAND’ Satellite Signal. This means that only Vertical Low and Horizontal Low signal is needed by your DSTV decoder in order to receive all the channels and services.
  • Multichoice has run out of Bandwidth on this ‘LOW BAND’ and has been forced to include the ‘HIGH BAND’ in order to deliver more HD channels and services. This means that very soon your decoder will require the LOW and HIGH bands (Vertical Low, Vertical High, Horizontal Low and Horizontal High) in order to receive all the channels and services.
  • 99% of all Communal DSTV Systems in South Africa currently do not allow or cater for the High Band without a System Upgrade taking place.

There are two types of Optical Fiber DSTV systems that can be fully customized to suite any type or size of Residential Estate, Building or Complex.

  1. Satellite only Fiber Optical Communal System
  2. Satellite and Digital Terrestrial Fiber Optical Communal System 

Satellite only Fiber Optical Communal System

This type of Optical Fiber System only delivers a Satellite Signal to every unit or home. This type of system caters for any type of DSTV decoder including the Explora as well as any ExtraView configuration. It also caters for OVHD decoders but does not cater for Digital Terrestrial. This type of system would typically be used where Terrestrial signal is not a requirement and is more cost effective than a system that does cater for Digital Terrestrial signal. The entire system is made up of Fiber Optic equipment and cable and incorporates the following:

  • An Optical Fiber LNB that sits on the dish and immediately transmits an Optical Fiber Signal straight from the LNB.
  • An Optical Fiber Splitter/s that would split the Optical signal down main Trunk Lines or directly into the units.
  • Optical Fiber Cable that carries the Optical Signal from source point to receive point.
  • An Optical Fiber Receiver that sits inside the unit and converts the Optical Signal back to a usable RF or Coaxial signal for a Decoder. These Optical Receivers would only accommodate a Satellite Signal (VL, VH, HL, HH).

Satellite and Digital Terrestrial Fiber Optical Communal System

This type of Optical Fiber System delivers a Satellite Signal together with a Digital Terrestrial Signal to every unit or home. This type of system caters for any type of DSTV decoder including the Explora as well as any ExtraView configuration. It also caters for OVHD decoders as well as Digital Terrestrial. The entire system is made up of Fiber Optic equipment and cable and incorporates the following:

  • An All Band LNB at the dish that converts all four Satellite Bands (VL, VH, HL and HH) into a single cable for use with a matching All Band Optical Fiber Transmitter.
  • All Band Optical Fiber Transmitter used to create and distribute the Optical Signal.
  • An Optical Fiber Splitter/s that would split the Optical signal down main Trunk Lines or directly into the units.
  • Optical Fiber Cable that carries the Optical Signal from source point to receive point.
  • An Optical Fiber Receiver that sits inside the unit and converts the Optical Signal back to a usable RF or Coaxial signal for a Satellite and Digital Terrestrial (VL, VH, HL, HH and Terrestrial).
